Flemish Minister of Culture, Jan Jambon, allocates an Extra 18 Million Euros a Year for the Cultural Heritage Sector

The Flemish Government has decided to allocate an additional 18 million euros over the next five years to the cultural heritage sector. This brings the total amount for structural operational subsidies within the Cultural Heritage Decree to 51.5 million euros per year.

M Leuven Presents Solo Show by Belgian Artist Nel Aerts

Starting on 25 October 2019, M is presenting a solo exhibition by the Belgian artist Nel Aerts (1987, Turnhout). Aerts transformes the architecture of the hall and thus introduces her own universe into the museum. The exhibition brings together both older and new work, including a series of new sculptures that Aerts is exhibiting for the first time.

RKD Acquires Previously Unknown Letters, Postcards and Photos by Piet Mondrian

The RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History purchased eighteen unknown letters and postcards by Piet Mondrian at an auction in Paris. The letters were to the Remonstrant cleric and collector Hendrik van Assendelft, and to an American couple who were fellow artists. The letters to Van Assendelft contain new information on Mondrian's stay in the Netherlands during the First World War, when his work underwent the crucial development from naturalistic to abstract. The letters show that Van Assendelft was an important sounding board for Mondrian.

Banksy Truck Crashes Goodwood Motor Car Sale

A 17-ton truck, covered in graffiti by the artist Banksy, will be offered by Bonhams on Saturday 14 September, at its motor car auction, the Goodwood Revival sale. The vehicle (a Volvo FL6 box lorry), entitled Turbo Zone Truck (Laugh Now But One Day We'll Be in Charge), from 2000, is the largest-ever work created by Banksy, with a painted surface area of 80 square metres. The estimate of £1,000,000-1,500,000 ($1,300,000-2,000,000) reflects the work's importance.

Kingdom of the Netherlands Establishes Endowment Fund in Support of Center for Netherlandish Art at MFA Boston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), announced this Monday that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has shared its intent to establish a permanent endowment fund in support of the MFA’s Center for Netherlandish Art (CNA). The fund, named The Kingdom of the Netherlands Fund for Dutch Scholars, will allow Dutch academics, students and institutions to participate in CNA programs and research initiatives, sustaining international connections between scholars in both countries.

Martijn van Nieuwenhuysen to be the New Director of De Pont Museum

Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen will be the new director of De Pont Museum in Tilburg. As of 26 August he will succeed Hendrik Driessen, De Pont's founding director who has been running the museum for thirty years. Van Nieuwenhuyzen has a great deal of museum experience, is a versatile exhibition maker and has a reputation for scouting young talent.

Two Paintings in the Netherlands Art Property Collection Back to Heirs of Jewish Owner

The Restitutions Committee has advised the Minister of Education, Culture and Science to restitute two paintings in the Netherlands Art Property Collection to the heirs of the original Jewish owner Jacob Lierens. The Minister has accepted this advice. The Netherlands Art Property Collection (NK collection) comprises artworks that were returned after the Second World War and were taken into the custody of the Dutch State with the express instruction to return them – if possible – to the rightful claimants or their heirs.
