Haegue Yang takes over as Chair of the Kunst-Werke-Verein Berlin

KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e. V., umbrella organization for KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art announced the internationally renowned artist Haegue Yang as its new Chair of the Executive Board.

She succeeds Katharina Grosse, who is stepping down from her position as Chair after four years of dedicated and successful service. Paula Macedo Weiß and Katharina Kurz will continue their collaboration with the institution as Executive Board members.

“I am very pleased that, after four very intense and extremely educative years, I am able to hand over the Chair of KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e. V. to Haegue Yang, thus continuing the association’s tradition of placing the Chair in the hands of an artist. With her cultural foresight and her impressive artistic practice worldwide, Haegue Yang will provide the association and the institution with inspiration and support in all processes. For the board, it is of utmost importance that, with Haegue Yang, a clear and astute voice from the perspective of artistic practice accompanies the institution and represents it outwardly,” said former Chair Katharina Grosse about the appointment.

“KW accompanies artists in crucial phases of their careers. The institution is not only a space, but a driving force in the artistic ecosystem. This position is indispensable and deserves our constant commitment. I am very pleased to be able to support Emma Enderby and Axel Wieder as well as KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e.V. in this responsibility,” says the newly elected Chair of the Executive Board, Haegue Yang.

Haegue Yang currently lives and works in Berlin and Seoul and teaches at Staedelschule, her alma mater. A prolific artist known for her versatile works ranging from room- scaled installations and performative sculptures, to paper collages and staging projects, Yang recently had solo exhibitions at institutions such as Kunsthal Rotterdam (2025), Hayward Gallery, London (2024), and Pinacoteca de São Paulo (2023). In 2018, Yang won the Wolfgang Hahn Prize at Ludwig Museum in Cologne and in 2022 was awarded the 13th Benesse Prize during the Singapore Biennale. Her work is represented in prominent institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Guggenheim New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum Ludwig, Cologne and Mori Art
Museum, Tokyo.
