Van Gogh Museum: Progress in Subsidy Talks with Dutch Government
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Dutch Ministry of Culture have made good progress in the mediation process to break the deadlock over subsidies.
The two parties were scheduled to meet in court, but the case has been adjourned. "Although a number of details still need to be coordinated, both parties see sufficient grounds to continue talks and reach a definitive solution," a spokesperson reports.
The case revolves around funding the museum says it needs for a renovation. This would cost 104 million euros. The government provides the Van Gogh Museum with an annual subsidy of 8.5 million euros, but the museum argues this should increase to 11 million. According to the museum, the ministry is unwilling to do so, which would result in the museum facing an annual deficit of 2.5 million euros. The Ministry of Culture believes that sufficient funds are being allocated to the museum.
The parties aim to conclude the mediation before the summer.
