The 2027 Triennial’s title, The Outside Expands, takes partial inspiration from a July 1979 urban intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3 (3US3), X Galeria (X Gallery), in which the artists branded the entrances of several São Paulo galleries with duct-taped “X”s accompanied by a message: “O que está dentro fica, o que está fora se expande” (“What is inside remains, what is outside expands”). Taking place amidst the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil, the action invited artists and cultural workers to think beyond institutions during a period of extreme repression. In 2018, another phrase “O que não tem espaço está em todo lugar” (“What has no space is everywhere”) was cut out from a temporary museum wall in Rio de Janeiro by the artist and writer Jota Mombaça, leaving the traces of its extraction visible, reminiscent of a ruin. Mombaça later used the phrase as the title of a 2020–21 video project, developed before and during early phases of the Covid-19 pandemic, mapping rituals of care and connection and chronicling the global travel of a transgender, non-binary, and Black artist navigating daily and persistent experiences of systemic violence. These interrelated phrases and the actions they reflect affirm the expansive potential to move beyond defined institutional spaces, and by extension, beyond structural logics that aim to delineate and distinguish.
The “X” also symbolizes a crossroad to allow critical reflection on the past and carves out a space for envisioning other futures. The Outside Expands turns towards artists that destabilize fixed notions of territory, identity, gender, and sexuality and who foster alternate ways of forging relationships, kinships, and collaborations.
This edition will present new and recent work by a majority of artists who are exhibiting in a US museum for the first time.
