The Dutch government wants to buy the painting De Vaandeldrager by Rembrandt and “bring it into the public domain for good”. The work is now in the possession of the French banking family, Rothschild.
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science writes that it wants to allocate 150 million euros for the purchase. The Rembrandt Association is also assisting with 15 million euros and 10 million euros will be paid from the Rijksmuseum Fund.
