Although almost nothing is known regarding the artist’s life, the date of 5 April 1474 is the first reference to Jheronimus Bosch’s existence, when he is referred to as a witness for his sister in the sale of the mortgage on a house in the small town of Geffen (The Netherlands). At that date the artist was around 24, the legal age for acting independently in a notarial document.
The Museo del Prado has made 5 April “Jheronimus Bosch Day” and is celebrating it with various initiatives intended to promote knowledge of this enigmatic 15th-century artist, one of the most famous names in western art.
The Prado houses the largest collection in the world of works by Bosch, including masterpieces such as The Haywain, The Adoration of the Magi and The Temptations of Saint Anthony. It is now focusing on The Garden of Earthly Delights, which can possibly be considered the artist’s most astonishing work and one that, despite the great progress which has been made in knowledge of the painter, continues to reflect the opinion expressed by Antonio de Beatis in 1517: “Things as pleasing as they are fantastical which, for those who are not familiar with them, can never be adequately described”, in reference to the painting’s content.
The Garden of Earthly Delights will thus be the star of the video “At Bosch’s feet”, a video featuring the dancer Eduardo Guerrero, inspired by the work, “Under one’s feet”, Guerrero creates a universe of forms, volumes and movements around Bosch’s painting.
