Switzerland Establishes Commission for Looted Art

The government in Bern, Switzerland, has decided to establish a commission for looted art.

The panel of experts, to be appointed, is intended to provide non-binding recommendations to resolve disputes over artworks related to the Nazi era and colonialism.

Similar committees exist in Germany and Austria for years. One of the triggers in Switzerland was the controversy surrounding the collection of Swiss arms manufacturer and art collector Emil Bührle (1890-1956). This revolves around the question whether the Bührle Foundation has thoroughly examined the collection contains looted or displaced property from people who had to flee the Nazis.
