Suspect arrested for Warhol Robbery in The Netherlands

Friday night thieves used heavy explosives to enter MPV gallery in The Netherlands, causing significant damage to the building.

The thieves attempted to steal the Reigning Queens series: four silkscreen prints, British Queen Elizabeth II (who passed away two years ago), Denmark’s Margrethe II (who stepped down earlier this year), Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands (stepped down in 2013), and Ntombi Twala of Swaziland (still queen). In 1985 when Warhol presented the silkscreens, they were the only queens in the world.
The thieves took all the prints but eventually left Beatrix and Twala behind, probably because there wasn’t enough room in their getaway vehicle. The thieves smashed the glass out of the frames of Elizabeth and Margrethe and tore out the silkscreens according to an MPV Gallery spokesperson. She said that the artworks must have been severely damaged.
The police cannot confirm if the stolen pop-art has been recovered. Earlier, a gallery spokesperson said it was "a crying shame" that the series has now been "torn apart."
