Stolen 16th-Century Masterpiece Returned to La Coruña after Major Smuggling Bust
A 16th-century Flemish panel painting depicting The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint Joseph has been officially transferred to the Fine Arts Museum of La Coruña, Spain, joining its permanent collection.
The museum, managed by the Regional Government of Galicia, received the painting following a successful recovery operation targeting illegal cultural trafficking.
A joint investigation by Spain's Guardia Civil, the Italian Carabinieri, and the Spanish Ministry of Culture dismantled an illicit trafficking network. The operation retrieved over 60 illegally exported cultural treasures, including works attributed to Amedeo Modigliani and Pieter Brueghel.
Originating from an estate in Marbella, the assets were illegally smuggled into Italy after being denied required export licenses due to their national significance. International police cooperation tracked the items through Italian galleries, private residences, and overseas buyers.
Under Spanish law, illegally exported cultural assets automatically become state property. The recovered items have been distributed across several prominent Spanish institutions, including the Reina Sofía Museum, the Museum of Málaga, and the Fine Arts Museum of Valencia.
Attributed to an anonymous master from the Antwerp School, the well-preserved panel was formally assigned to LA Coruña during the 97th Historical Heritage Council meeting in Rome in October 2025.
