The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart has made a significant addition to its collection with the acquisition of a new work by internationally renowned Colombian artist Doris Salcedo. The Friends of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart e.V. purchased "Disremembered XV," a poignant piece from Salcedo's ongoing "Disremembered" series, which explores themes of loss, grief, and social injustice.
"Disremembered XV" is a haunting sculpture, crafted from delicate silk threads intricately woven with thousands of burnt needles. It evokes the fragility of human life and the enduring pain of loss, drawing inspiration from Salcedo's encounters with mothers who have lost children to gun violence. The work, while visually striking, carries a profound sense of sorrow, reflecting the artist's deep empathy for those affected by violence and the societal indifference that often accompanies such tragedies.
"Disremembered XV" will be on view starting January 28th in the Staatsgalerie's new collection presentation, "THIS IS TOMORROW," where it will engage in a dialogue with other powerful works in the museum's collection, including Teresa Margolles's monumental "The Black Shroud."
This acquisition comes on the heels of Salcedo being named the recipient of the prestigious Whitechapel Art Icon Award, further solidifying her position as one of the most influential and respected artists of our time.
