Russian Attack damages UNESCO-Listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Monastry
A Russian drone and missile strike has damaged parts of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Ukraine’s most famous religious complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ukraine’s Culture Ministry said.
The attack took place on the night of January 24. According to the ministry, a preliminary inspection found damage to doors and window frames. Photos released showed a cracked window and an open notebook covered with dust and pieces of plaster.
Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna says: "Everyday Russia launches attacks on Ukraine. Damage done to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastry is an attack by the Russian Federation on UNESCO World Heritage, a crime against the heritage of mankind."

Founded in the 11th century, the complex comprises more than 100 buildings, as well as a subterranean labyrinth of caves where monks live and hold religious services. For Orthodox Christians, the Lavra Monastry is considered Ukraine’s spiritual centre.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion nearly four years ago, hundreds of historical buildings have been damaged, including religious sites, museums and libraries, according to UNESCO.
In 2023, the UN cultural body added the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra to its list of endangered sites, citing the “threat of destruction” posed by Russia’s ongoing offensive.
