Renovation of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, saved by gift of 80 Million Euros

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Mecanoo architects, and the Municipality of Rotterdam support the 'Ambition' scenario, which provides the best, most future-proof renovation for the museums so it can benefit to all involved parties.

To make the plan possible, the Rotterdam-based Droom en Daad Foundation has offered up to 80 million euros for the renovation. In September 2024, the Rotterdam City Council will decide whether to approve this project. The planned reopening year remains 2029.
Mecanoo Architects plan includes several highlights, there will be a recessed entrance in the courtyard and on the Museum Park side, making the ground floors of the building much more vibrant. A new truck dock at the back of the building will provide a much-needed logistical solution. The Hannemazaal will return, the inner garden will be covered, and the monumental facade of the Bodon wing will once again face the Museum Park street.
