Ralph Gleis, the director of the Alte Nationalgalerie at the National Museums in Berlin, emerged as the most successful candidate to lead the Albertina in Vienna, starting from January 1, 2025.
State Secretary Andrea Mayer stated, "Mr. Gleis convinced the selection committee and myself with his competence and experience, as well as his aura of professionalism, enthusiasm for the Albertina, and his ideas regarding the museum's collections, which he sees as an opportunity rather than a limitation. Ralph Gleis encompasses everything one could wish for in the leader of an institution of this magnitude. In my view, the Albertina is in the best hands, even after the impressive era under the leadership of Mr. Schröder."
"The Albertina, with its world-class graphic collection, extensive collections of painting, sculpture, photography, and architecture, as well as its diverse exhibition program, is one of Austria's outstanding museums and an internationally recognized institution," said the designated director general, Ralph Gleis. "I feel honored and extremely excited to continue the current success and shape the future of the Albertina as the director general, starting from 2025, together with an excellent team."
