National Monument in Amsterdam defaced with Red Paint
The National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam, the setting for the National Remembrance Day on May 4, has been defaced with red paint.
The word 'genocide' has also been painted on the statue. Cleaning workers are currently busy removing the paint. It is not known who is behind the action, according to local TV Station AT5.
It is not the first time something like this has happened. Last year, the monument was defaced during a large pro-Palestinian demonstration.
In a statement the Mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema says: "What an incredibly cowardly act. This is not a protest, but vandalism and deliberate damage to our national monument. It hurts not only the relatives of the victims of the Second World War, but all Dutch people for whom our national commemoration is important. The municipality is working with all its might to clean the monument, and the police are currently conducting an investigation."
