Montpelliers' Carré Saint-Anne opens with an Exhibition by JR

JR’s “Adventice” transforms the historic Carré Sainte-Anne in Montpellier into a space of collective memory and evolving participation.

At the center stands a monumental tree-like sculpture composed of over 10,000 life-sized hand scans gathered from individuals across the globe, each one a marker of presence, identity, and connection.

Visitors are invited to contribute their own hand scans on site, allowing the work to grow and shift throughout the exhibition.

The title “Adventice” a term for plants that grow wild in places they weren’t intentionally sown, becomes a powerful metaphor for migration, resilience, and the unexpected roots we lay in new environments. Echoing Montpellier’s own history as a port of exchange and movement, the installation draws lines between local soil and global stories.

Also on view are five new works in wood and paper that echo the main installation’s themes on a more intimate scale. Curated by Numa Hambursin, the exhibition runs through December 7.
