Manifesta 14 Prishtina's 100-Day Art Festival Comes to a Close

Manifesta 14 Prishtina consisted of a 100-day interdisciplinary programme of artistic and urban interventions, performances, events, and education workshops. With its Urban Vision, Commons Sense, and artistic programme

Manifesta 14 Prishtina consisted of a 100-day interdisciplinary programme of artistic and urban interventions, performances, events, and education workshops. With its Urban Vision, Commons Sense, and artistic programme: 'It matters what worlds world worlds: how to tell stories otherwise', the European Nomadic Biennial took up the challenge of exploring new modes of collective storytelling and reclaiming public space. For the first time, Manifesta created a permanent institution, the Centre for Narrative Practice, which is home to the education space, OAZA.

The European Nomadic Biennial welcomed 151.609 visits to the indoor venues of the parcours and over 626.210 visits to the works presented in public space. The expansive public programme was attended by 18.183 visitors. Consisting of more than 100 events ranging from film screenings, artist talks, and poetry readings to workshops, performances, and electronic music nights that took place at the Centre for Narrative Practice, the Brick Factory, the Grand Hotel Prishtina, and many other Manifesta 14 venues.

Manifesta 14’s Education programme organised 22 activities for families, as well as a large variety of workshops for children led by Manifesta 14 participants and collaborators at Oaza, the library for children and young adults at the Centre for Narrative Practice. Through its Mediation programme, Manifesta 14 organised 346 mediated tours across the city, introducing a new manner for audiences to engage with the culture in Prishtina.

Manifesta has achieved renown for its lasting impact on Host Cities. This impact results from multiple years of careful planning, dedicated to ensuring each edition’s material and immaterial legacy. For its 14th edition, Manifesta focused on making an impact by reclaiming public space and encouraging citizens to reimagine how they and their communities can use that space to create positive change. Manifesta 14 has also contributed significantly to changing the perception of Kosovo in and beyond Europe, by inviting the world to Prishtina and nurturing new impressions of its cultural abundance.

For the first time in the biennial’s history, Manifesta 14 Prishtina, as an administration and legal entity, will continue to function as an instrument of cultural policy and infrastructural development of Prishtina and its cultural scene. Following the closing on the 30th of October 2022, the European Nomadic Biennial will pursue selected key projects in the Kosovar capital by means of a public-private partnership, drawing on its track record from past editions and the success of this 14th edition. Doing so will ensure enduring returns for the citizens of Kosovo as well as the biennial’s partners and donors.

We would like to thank all our partners and donors for their dedication to and their faith in Manifesta 14. In particular, we thank the Municipality of Prishtina and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport of the Republic of Kosovo. Manifesta 14 Prishtina was created together with artists, urbanists, scientists, writers, thinkers, and policymakers from Kosovo and from around the world but most of all, it was produced together with and for the people of Prishtina who wholeheartedly welcomed the biennial to their city. A special thank you to our dear Manifesta team, without whom we would not have been able to develop this beautiful project, and to our Creative Mediators, Catherine Nichols and Carlo Ratti for all they gave to Kosovo’s capital.

Manifesta 14 Prishtina has demonstrated to both the government and people of Kosovo that culture is not only the key to democracy, peace-building, and social transformation but also a crucial economic factor. The rich programme of the European Nomadic Biennial has supported the full expression of ideas across mediums and modes, frames of reference, and subjects of interest. We are convinced these stories – our stories – will resonate long into the future, on the tips of our tongues, at the tops of our minds, and in the reclaimed public spaces we will continue to share.
