It is a dark day for the Drents Museum in Assen and the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest.
The Drents Museum is deeply shocked by the events of last night in the museum. In its 170-year existence, such a major incident has never occurred.
"This causes us great sadness towards our colleagues in Romania."
The thieves were able to enter the museum after setting off an explosive, which shattered several windows. Public prosecutor Debby Homans said this at a press conference in the museum. Police say they are looking for a suspicious vehicle and are asking local residents if they have images of the explosion.
A number of objects from the exhibition Dacia – Empire of Gold and Silver have been stolen, including the masterpiece the golden Helmet of Coțofenești, c.a. 450 BC, a loan from the National History Museum of Romania.
The police are investigating the theft and the museum is awaiting the outcome of this investigation.
