Louvre Museum Closes for the Third Time Due to Strike

The Louvre Museum in Paris has closed its doors for the third time in January due to ongoing strikes by staff demanding increased hiring, higher wages, and improved working conditions.

Louvre employees will go on strike on monday and continue talks with the government after months of mounting pressure on the world’s most visited museum, which unions have described as being “in crisis.”

Trade unions emphasize that not only pay rises, but also the museum’s management approach and its security and maintenance policies must be brought into question.

The strike comes as the museum struggles with the aftermath of a daylight jewel heist and an earlier staff strike that abruptly shut the Louvre and stranded thousands of visitors. Last month, the Louvre also announced the temporary closure of some employees’ offices and one public gallery because of weakened floor beams.

The Louvre website says: Monday 26 January:
Dear visitors, due to public strikes, the Musée du Louvre is closed today.
If you have made a reservation for today using the museum’s online ticketing service, your ticket will be refunded automatically – no action required on your part.
We thank you for your understanding.
