The 1,000-year-old Christian monastery is on fire in Kyiv amid Russia’s latest barrage on Ukraine.
The Dormition Cathedral, which was built in the 11th century, inside the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex is on fire. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is one of the holiest Christian sites in eastern Europe.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on Instagram that Russia struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, has also attributed the fire to ongoing Russian attacks.
Sybiha also wrote that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had “forever put his name on the list of history’s worst barbarians” on one of Christianity’s holiest sites.
