Kanal/Pompidou Brussels director Yves Goldstein resigns before Museum Opening

Brussels cultural project Kanal/ Centre Pompidou is shaken ahead of its inauguration in November following the resignation of director Yves Goldstein.

Yves Goldstein announced his decision in an interview with De Standaard. He will remain as director until a successor is found and considers his mission complete. “I had set three goals: to transform the Citroën garage into a museum, to develop a project and to put together a team. That has happened,” he then told Bruzz.

It was time for the focus to switch to operating the site, he added. “Supervising the daily operations and closely monitoring the budgets is less in my DNA. You need a real manager type for that.”

Although Goldstein said his action is unrelated to Kanal’s financial difficulties but  intended to ensure stability, the news further fuels the uncertainty surrounding its opening.

The Kanal-Centre Pompidou will house modern and contemporary art in a former  factory in Brussels. At 40,000 square metres, it is set to become one of the largest museums in Europe, the total budget is estimated at around €230 million.

Goldstein’s successor will need to manage rising costs against Brussels' budget crisis. Although the new regional government has approved the operating budget, the museum will be required to make savings.
