JR's "The Cave of the Pont-Neuf" is taking Shape in Paris

From June 6 to 28, 2026, "The Cave of the Pont-Neuf," designed by JR, will rise in the heart of Paris.
Paris's oldest bridge is being transformed into a monumental grotto. In a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's wrapping of the Pont-Neuf in 1985, the artist has taken on the most spectacular challenge of his career with "La Caverne du Pont-Neuf", creating the world's largest immersive artwork : 120 meters long, 20 meters wide, and 12 to 18 meters high.
The raw material for this installation is not stone: it rests on an inflatable structure. Air will fill 80 structural canvas arches, outlining the volume of this ephemeral construction.
At the heart of this monumental installation lies the desire to highlight the origins of Paris's historical architecture. To create his sketches, JR drew inspiration from the quarries of the Oise region, the source of the stones for the Pont-Neuf. The surface of the printed canvas will reproduce the rugged, mineral appearance of the limestone, creating a dialogue between the past and the present.
While the exterior of " The Cave of the Pont-Neuf " is designed to amaze – or puzzle – Parisians and visitors, the interior of the artwork, accessible to the public, will be no less captivating. "It will be a symbolic crossing, a step towards the unknown, a journey in itself. I conceived the experience of passing through 'The Cave' as an experience where fullness and emptiness exist in balance ," explains JR.
