Greece reaches Agreement with Collector on WWII Photographs from Greece

The Greek Ministry of Culture authenticated the collection of WWII photographs from Greece owned by a memorabilia collector in Belgium and reached an agreement to buy them.

Initially, a Belgian collector posted 12 photographs for sale on eBay, as part of a larger collection by German army officer Hermann Heuer, that showed the execution of 200 Greeks at Kessariani. Alerted by media posts, the ministry declared the entire collection a modern Greek monument, and got in touch with the collector.

The Greek Ministry of Culture released the following statement (in its entirety, below):

"Today, at Evergem's City Hall, the delegation of the Ministry of Culture met with the collector. The delegation examined the entire Heuer collection, which comprises 262 photographs taken in Greece during his tour of duty in 1943-1944, as well as some documents he himself had included in it. Macroscopic examination by experienced officials of the Ministry of Culture and independent experts confirmed the material's authenticity. A preliminary agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the colllector was signed, and the collection was removed from the online auction site."
