Future of the Van Gogh Museum Secured

The Van Gogh Museum and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science have reached an agreement that will make it possible to finance the much-needed renovation of the museum building. The uncertainty over the museum’s future has now been resolved.

After more than fifty years of intensive use, the Van Gogh Museum building is no longer future proof and requires renovation. If not addressed, the building’s condition would eventually be insufficient to guarantee security, climate control and sustainability.

The Van Gogh Museum and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science have now successfully completed a mediation process. This has resulted in a settlement agreement regarding funding for the renovation, which secures the future of the museum and the collection.

General Director Emilie Gordenker: ‘The renovation is necessary to preserve the building and the renowned collection for visitors, staff and future generations. We have reached a settlement with the ministry that is in the spirit of the agreement between the Dutch State and the founder of the museum V.W. van Gogh. We are relieved and grateful to be able to move forward with this important project.’

As a settlement agreement has been reached, renovation of the Van Gogh Museum building is planned to commence in the autumn of 2028. The project will focus on crucial maintenance, improvements to sustainability and future-proofing the museum. Most of the works will take place behind the scenes and will not entail major changes to the museum building. The museum will remain partially open for the duration of the project, and the permanent collection will remain accessible to visitors.
