Mesoma Hammida Onyeagba’s journey in the world of art is a tale of resilience, passion, and a commitment to self-expression. Born and raised in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Mesoma’s childhood played a crucial role in shaping her artistic path. Growing up in a secluded environment with limited access to peers, she found solace and inspiration in art, thanks to the encouragement of her mother, a Nigerian actress. Her mother’s belief in self-expression and creative exploration opened the door for Mesoma to discover her talent early on.
"I create to escape" Mesoma explains, reflecting on how art allowed her to navigate the challenges of her childhood. Spending hours drawing and painting at home with her family provided her with an outlet for creativity and a means of self-discovery. As she grew older, her talent became evident, and she took on more significant roles in the artistic community at her boarding high school, where her peers admired her for her artistic contributions to the school’s events and projects.
Despite her evident passion and talent, pursuing art professionally in Nigeria posed unique challenges. The cultural perception of art as a less viable career path meant Mesoma had to fight against societal norms and expectations. Determined to follow her dreams, she left Nigeria to study in North America, a decision that marked a pivotal turning point in her artistic journey.
Mesoma’s academic achievements underscore her dedication to mastering her craft. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa and went on to complete her Master’s in Fine Arts at the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. These years of rigorous training not only honed her technical skills but also expanded her artistic perspective, allowing her to merge her Nigerian heritage with contemporary techniques and ideas.
Throughout her career, Mesoma has drawn heavily on themes of familiarity, nostalgia, representation, and identity. Her works are vibrant and exuberant, a reflection of her desire to spread visual joy and connect with audiences on a deeply personal level. "Positive messaging is at the heart of my art," she shares, emphasizing her commitment to creating works that resonate with viewers from diverse backgrounds.
Her journey has also been marked by significant achievements. In 2021, she was recognized as one of the Emerging Artists to Watch at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, and in 2024, she was awarded the Municipal Art League Fellowship based on merit from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her art has found a home in prestigious private collections, including those of Amy Sherald and Beth Rudin DeWoody, a testament to her growing influence in the art world.
Now based in Chicago, Mesoma is focused on creating a grand solo exhibition that will showcase her latest works, including textile-based pieces that push the boundaries of her artistic exploration. Her vision for the future is equally ambitious, as she aims to open a space where she can host art workshops, establish her own gallery, and foster a sense of community among fellow artists.
From a secluded childhood in Port Harcourt to gaining international recognition in Chicago, Mesoma Onyeagba’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of art and the determination to stay true to one’s passion. Her story inspires aspiring artists worldwide to embrace their individuality and pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
