EU pledges Extra €250,000 to Safeguard Ukrainian Cultural Heritage

The European Union has announced an additional €250,000 in funding to support Ukrainian culture, while the United Kingdom is set to more than double its contribution to the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Fund.

The announcement followed a meeting in Brussels between European Commissioner for Culture Glenn Micallef and UK Minister for Media, Tourism and Creative Industries Ian Murray.

Glenn Micallef: "A key part of today’s discussion was Ukraine. The Union remains determined to continue supporting Ukraine. This war is not only fought on the battlefield — it is also waged against the soul of a nation, its culture, its memory, and its identity, in response, the European Union remains committed to supporting Ukraine. This includes preserving and protecting its cultural heritage and creative community. I am pleased to announce today that the European Commission will increase support by an additional quarter of a million euros, the funding will help Ukraine strengthen risk management capacity and ensure the protection of cultural sites, archives, and artworks even under the most challenging conditions."

Ian Murray: "I am pleased to confirm that the United Kingdom is more than doubling its contribution to the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Fund, together, we are sending a clear message: culture matters, heritage matters, and attempts to erase identity, history, and creativity will not succeed.”
