Dortmund Cultural Foundation Prize for Rosemarie Trockel
Rosemarie Trockel has received the Dortmund Cultural Foundation Prize in recognition of her life’s work.
Recognized as one of the most influential artists of her generation, she was presented with the prize at a ceremonial event which also marked the opening of her exhibition “Déjà-vu” at the Baukunstarchiv NRW. On behalf of the artist, her gallery owner Monika Sprüth accepted the honorary prize, worth 25,000 euros, in Dortmund Germany.
The laudatory speech was delivered by Dr Yilmaz Dziewior, Director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and a member of the prize’s independent expert jury. Dziewior emphasized the extraordinary versatility and originality of Trockel’s artistic oeuvre, which challenges social conventions and cultural attributions. The Dortmund Cultural Foundation’s prize in the category of visual arts was awarded for the first time since 2012.
René Scheer, Chairman of the Dortmund Cultural Foundation, emphasised: “Rosemarie Trockel’s work stands for extraordinary artistic freedom, for the courage to cross boundaries, and for a constant engagement with the great questions of our time. With this award, we are honoring not only an impressive life’s work, but also an artist whose works continually inspire us to question familiar ways of seeing and to adopt new perspectives.”
Rosemarie Trockel donated half of the prize money to the Dortmund Women’s Shelter and the other half to the Potsdam Women’s Shelter.
