Donald Judd Historic District in Texas placed on National Register of Historic Places

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) is pleased to announce the recent listing of the Donald Judd Historic District in Marfa on the National Register of Historic Places.

An amendment to the existing Fort D.A. Russell Historic District, the newest listing encompasses 15 buildings and one work of art and recognizes Judd’s contributions to art and architecture from 1973 until his death in 1994.

The buildings have been recognized for their association with Judd, who was an internationally renowned artist, and for the modifications he made to them.

The Chinati Foundation, established by Judd in 1986, oversees nine of the buildings and the work of art on the grounds of Fort D.A. Russell. Judd Foundation, created by the artist, stewards the other six buildings in the district as part of the sites it maintains in Marfa.

The THC recommended the historical district for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in September 2024. It was officially listed by the National Parks Service on its National Register of Historic Places in May 2025.

Following the establishment of the Central Marfa Historic District in 2022, it is the second district in Marfa associated with Judd.
