Documenting Israel : Visions of 75 Years at The Museum of Tolerance, Jerusalem

The Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem invites the general public on a journey through time in honor of the 75th Independence Day of the State of Israel: a unique photo exhibition documenting the State of Israel as it has never been seen before.

Showcasing of the works of 12 artists, from 1931 until today. The selected works draw a diverse portrait of Israeli society and offer many perspectives through which to observe the State of Israel, its development and the growth of its communities.

Photos of the State

Two of the founders of the international photography agency 'Magnum' – Jewish photographers Robert Capa and David "Chim" Seymour, visited Israel frequently between the years 1947-1956 and closely documented the rise and first years of the State of Israel. The documentation of these two photographers, who gained world fame due to their international work, presents an optimistic point of view on the new state that was established from the ruins of the Holocaust.

Presenting photographs taken in Mandatory Palestine in the 1930’s by the Swiss avant-garde portrait photographer Helmar Lerski, alongside works commissioned in January 2023 by the American photographer Bruce Gilden.

Which has never been shown before – featuring the photographer Inge Morath, one of the first women members of the photography agency 'Magnum'. Her photographs will be shown alongside the work of other senior photographers, including the Israeli photographer Micha Bar-Am and modern artists Benyamin Reich, Sigalit Landau and Nanna Heitmann.
