Centre Pompidou, M+, and MoMA Announce Unprecedented Cultural Alliance
Christophe Cherix, the David Rockefeller Director of The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), Laurent Le Bon, President of Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director of M+ in Hong Kong, jointly announced that the three institutions have formed a new cultural alliance.
They are uniting to bring their extraordinary collections to their respective audiences, develop co-organized exhibitions and programs, and deepen collaborative curatorial research and conservation, providing expanded opportunities for their combined 10 million annual in-person visitors and 125 million visitors online. While each institution will maintain its independence and identity, they will function together with greater capacities than are possible individually.
The museum leaders signed a Framework Agreement for the cultural alliance at an event held at M+ on October 30, 2026, in the presence of trustees and stakeholders of all three institutions.
Founded respectively in 1929, 1977, and 2021, MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and M+ have each introduced a new paradigm for collecting institutions dedicated to the art of their time. While spanning distinct origins, geographies, and cultural landscapes, the three complement one another in their commitment to public education and living artists, and together they hold an extraordinarily broad, deep, and multidisciplinary repository of 20th- and 21st-century creativity. With these resources and an unprecedented footprint across three continents, this cultural alliance will be able to expand how modern and contemporary art is understood, interpreted, and experienced in an increasingly interconnected world, reflecting how creative practice navigates and belongs to multiple cultures and drawing on collective expertise to amplify diverse perspectives.
“This cultural alliance makes our museums embassies for each other, in effect creating an extraordinary gateway that opens onto three continents. We will now be able to give our visitors direct access to the depth and breadth of all three institutions,” said Cherix, the David Rockefeller Director of MoMA. “Beyond expanding our reach to an unprecedented level, the cultural alliance also deepens intellectual exchange, as we align our programming, organize joint exhibitions, preserve art, and unite audiences worldwide, allowing us to function as more than the sum of our parts.”
“No single institution can encompass the entire scope of global creativity. We aim to work on a broader and deeper level,” said Le Bon, President of Centre Pompidou. “Our cultural alliance will, among other initiatives, enable long-term loans, deepening the presentation of key artists and movements.”
“Museums must evolve to reflect the complexity of our world. This cultural alliance brings together three leading collecting institutions united by a shared commitment to supporting artistic innovation and expanding public engagement through research and exchange,” said Raffel, Museum Director of M+. “As Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture, M+ brings perspectives from Hong Kong and our region to this dialogue. We hope to create new opportunities for artists and audiences, shape a more cooperative and sustainable future for museums, and reimagine how cultural narratives resonate around the world.”
