Bacon, Basquiat and Warhol shine at Sotheby’s London

The works reached record numbers in the auction of modern and contemporary art, with results that exceeded the estimates.

Sotheby’s London sold Francis Bacon's 'Portrait of a Dwarf (1975)' for £13.1 million (US$17.6 million) after more than ten minutes of bidding. His 'Study for Self-Portrait', also obtained a solid result of £5.77 million (US$7.75 million).

Jean-Michel Basquiat followed closely with 'Untitled (The Arm)', which achieved £5.5 million (US$7.4 million), confirming the sustained interest in his work. Andy Warhol added another milestone with Four Pink Marilyns (Reversal Series), sold at £4.3 million (US$5.8 million) after a brief but intense battle between four bidders.

Among the highlights were also Thomas Schütte’s 'Großer Geist Nr.6', £2.72 million (US$3.65 million), and the 'Spaziale Concept, Attese' (1964) by Lucio Fontana, sold for £2.8 million (US$3.75 million).
