The organizers of Art Basel today announced 287 participants in the Swiss fair’s flagship edition, to take place June 13–16, with preview days on June 11 and 12.
The exhibitors will arrive from forty countries; twenty-two galleries are making their debut appearances at the event. The 2024 iteration is the first under the leadership of Maike Cruse, who last May was named the fair’s inaugural director.
Two hundred forty-five exhibitors will appear in the fair’s main section. Of these, a handful have graduated from the Feature and Statements sections: Included in their ranks are Commonwealth and Council, of Mexico City and LA; Paris’s Galerie Crèvecœur; New York’s Garth Greenan Gallery; and the Seoul- and New York–based Tina Kim Gallery. Five galleries are making their first-ever appearances at the fair, to be featured in the main section: the LA- and New York–based Karma; Taipei’s Tina Keng Gallery; Shanghai’s Madeln Gallery; Mayoral, with outposts in Paris and Barcelona; and Yares Art, based in New York and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The fair additionally announced expanded citywide programming. The site-specific Parcours section will be organized by Stefanie Hessler, director of the Swiss Institute, New York. Parcours this year will occupy shopfronts along Basel’s Clarastrasse as well as the Hotel Merian, which organizers say will function as a “continuous, around-the-clock venue for artistic events and showcases.” The Film section is being curated by writer and curator Filipa Ramos and held at Basel’s Stadtkino, while writer and editor Kimberly Bradley will for the first time take charge of the Conversations program, free to the public and taking place at the city fairgrounds.
The Feature section, which is welcoming eleven inaugural participants, will present sixteen art-historical presentations, among them a “condensed” retrospective of the artist Jean Tinguely by Basel’s Galerie Mueller, a first-time participant. Shanghai’s Bank will showcase the partnership between Maryn Varbanov and Song Huai-Kuei (aka Madame Song), while Dakar’s OH Gallery will present work by modern Senegalese artist Viyé Diba.
Devoted to emerging artists, the Statements section will offer eighteen solo presentations and welcome six new exhibitors. Among the fresh faces are Jakarta’s ROH Projects, which is showing a sonic installation by Indonesian artist Julian Abraham “Togar,” and Oslo, Norway’s OSL contemporary, which will present a group of sculptures representing personal prayers by Sudanese artist Ahmed Umar.
The Twenty-Fifth Baloise Art Prize, accompanied by CHF 30,000 (roughly $34,000) will be presented to up to two artists appearing in the Statements section. The Baloise Group, a Swiss insurance holdings company, will also purchase works by the winning artists and donate them to European museums; these institutions will award the winning artists solo exhibitions.
