Anya Gallaccio has been commissioned to create The AIDS Memorial in London, due to be unveiled at the end of 2027. The news was announced today by AIDS Memory UK (AMUK), an organisation that aims to raise awareness of the continuing impact of HIV/AIDS.
Located on South Crescent, Store Street in Fitzrovia, The AIDS Memorial in London will take the form of a felled tree, with rings extracted from the core of its trunk. The chosen location is close to the site of the former Middlesex Hospital, where the first ward dedicated to the care and treatment of people affected by HIV/AIDS in the United Kingdom was established, and the memorial will offer a space for remembrance and solidarity, commemorating those affected by HIV/AIDS in the past, present and future.
Anya Gallaccio is the current holder of the Kenneth Armitage Foundation Fellowship (2023–2025), and later this year, Turner Contemporary in Margate will present preserve, the largest survey exhibition of her practice to date (28 September 2024–12 January 2025). Also this autumn, Gallaccio will bring her artwork Stroke to her birth town of Paisley, Scotland, for Jupiter+, a creative project by Jupiter Artland which uses art to promote agency and activism in young people.
