AHDRC: The Digital Heritage of African Tribal Art

The African Heritage Documentation and Research Centre (AHDRC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and dissemination of knowledge about African tribal art.

Founded by Dutch researcher and collector Guy van Rijn, AHDRC has become a leading resource for museums, galleries, collectors, and art enthusiasts around the world. Today, Guy’s son, Titus van Rijn, is also actively involved, helping to continue and expand the mission of the organization.

The online catalog of AHDRC is a continuously growing archive of African tribal art objects — from traditional masks and sculptures to ceremonial artifacts. Each object is meticulously documented with high-quality photography, detailed descriptions, provenance research, auction results and historical context.

What sets AHDRC apart is its dynamic and participatory nature, members can contribute at any time by adding new information, images, or references so the database grows organically into an ever more comprehensive resource. The forum of the NPO functions as a living community of knowledge-sharing, where expertise is exchanged and expanded.

Under the wakefull eye of Guy van Rijn, who has decades of experience in the field of African tribal art, AHDRC combines academic precision with a commitment to cultural preservation. His mission is about safeguarding and sharing cultural knowledge for future generations.

The platform is designed for a wide audience, academic researchers, museums, private collectors, auction houses and anyone interested in African culture. Through the ability to search objects by region, type, or cultural context, the platform offers a way to explore the importance of Africa’s artistic heritage.

At a time when cultural heritage is increasingly at risk from loss or lack of documentation, AHDRC plays a vital role. As a digital knowledge center that invites members to participate, it ensures a unique form of cultural heritage preservation.
