Art prints are cherished personal acquisitions, valuable pieces of artistic expression that carry sentimental and cultural value. Thus, keeping these prints in pristine condition is not merely about maintaining their physical appearance but also safeguarding their inherent worth. Different environmental factors and everyday handling can degrade or damage these pieces, which is why understanding and mastering art print preservation becomes crucial for any collector or enthusiast.

Some challenges in keeping art prints in excellent condition range from environmental hazards like ultraviolet (UV) radiation and fluctuating humidity, to improper handling and storage risks. Fortunately, while these challenges can be daunting, they are not insurmountable. With proper knowledge and the right approach, you can effectively mitigate these risks and ensure your treasured artworks remain vibrant and intact for years.

Here are some practical tips you can easily implement to guarantee your unique and cool art prints receive the care they deserve:

Minimise Exposure to Sunlight

One of the most significant threats to the longevity of art prints—or any printed art, for that matter—is exposure to direct sunlight. In particular, UV rays can cause colours to fade and paper to deteriorate over time. To protect your artwork, consider hanging them in areas of your home or office that aren’t too exposed to the sun. If you really want to put up a print in such a location, using curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours can be beneficial.

Note that even artificial light can have a detrimental effect on your illustration art prints, so try to moderate light exposure regardless of the source.

Choose UV-Protective Framing

Apart from keeping art prints out of direct sunlight, you can provide added protection by using UV-protective glass or acrylic frames. These specialised materials filter out harmful UV rays, offering an extra layer of defence against fading and degradation. When selecting a frame for your print, ask sellers about their UV-protective products. While they may be a little more expensive, the added investment can significantly extend the life and vibrancy of your art prints.

Control Environmental Conditions

Art pieces like prints and posters are susceptible to their surroundings, especially changes in humidity and temperature. Such fluctuations can lead to paper expansion and contraction, which may cause warping, wrinkling, or even mould growth. To prevent this, display or store your prints in a space with consistent temperature and a relative humidity between 40 and 60%. Using a dehumidifier or air conditioner in humid climates and a humidifier in dry places can help maintain ideal conditions. Also, avoid placing prints near heating or cooling vents, as the direct airflow can have adverse effects.

Practise Safe Handling Techniques

Did you know that the oils and dirt from human skin can significantly damage the surface of art prints? Thus, when handling your prints, make sure your hands are clean and dry. Better yet, wear soft cotton gloves. This precaution minimises the risk of transferring oils, moisture, or dirt onto the paper.

You should also hold the print from below rather than at the edges to prevent creases or tears. If you need to move a framed print, hold the frame rather than the glass to avoid adding pressure to the image.

Frame Prints with Acid-Free Materials

The acidity of certain framing materials, such as paper and adhesives, can deteriorate art prints over time. To keep prints, posters, and paintings in good shape, use acid-free mats, backing boards, and mounting tapes. These materials are designed to be chemically inert, which means they do not react with the print. Like UV-protective frames, acid-free options may be slightly more expensive but are well worth the investment.

Prevent Direct Glass Contact

Direct contact between the print and the glass of a frame can lead to sticking, moisture damage, or ink transfer. To avoid these issues, use a mat board to create a space between the print and the glass. Even a small gap will protect the image and also add an aesthetic dimension to the framing. As previously mentioned, the mat and any other materials in direct contact with the print should be acid-free to prevent chemical damage.

Maintain Cleanliness Regularly

Keeping your art prints and their frames clean is essential for their preservation. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to gently clean the frame and the glass to prevent dust buildup. Also, avoid cleaning chemicals or water, as these can seep into the frame and damage the print. If the image is unframed, it's best to leave the cleaning to professionals to avoid scratching the surface or accidentally creasing the print.

Rotate the Displayed Artwork

Constant exposure to even the most controlled environments can still damage art prints over time. As such, consider rotating the prints on display. This strategy not only reduces the amount of time each print is exposed to potential hazards, but also refreshes your space. Regular rotation is especially recommended for prints displayed in higher-risk areas, such as near windows or brightly lit rooms.

Consider Availing Insurance for Valuable Prints

If you own art prints of significant monetary or sentimental value, insuring them can be a wise decision. While insurance does not prevent physical damage, it provides financial protection in case of loss, theft, or accidental damage. Consult an insurance agent specialising in art or collectibles to understand the options you have. . It’s also wise to keep detailed records of your prints, including photographs, purchase receipts, and appraisals. Insurance offers peace of mind, knowing your treasured art is safeguarded against unforeseen circumstances.

Securing the Longevity of Your Art Through Proper Care

Maintaining the quality of your art prints is not just about prolonging their physical life, but also about honouring the creativity, history, and personal value they represent. By implementing these practices, you protect your investment and maintain the aesthetic and cultural essence of the art.
