Born in Tokyo into a French artistic family, Michel Testard has lived a life rich in travel and cultural immersion in Asia, Europe and Africa. His art vividly captures a large range of themes from realistic landscapes, urban or rural scenes, portraits and interiors. Michel also ventures into fantasy with his dreamlike "Room with a View" series from Goa, Kipling inspired jungles.
His work, influenced by Masters like Matisse, Gauguin and Amrita Sher-Gill, is full of
imagination, vibrant colors and spontaneity. Michel’s originality lies in his blend of East and West, reality and fantasy, creating a body of work that reflects his dedication to cultural exploration and the beauty of seeing the world through a wandering, reflective lens.
Michel Testard: "I have always loved all kinds of music—from classical to jazz and blues—and have played classical guitar for many years. When I arrived in India in 2002, I was deeply moved by Indian classical music and had the privilege of hearing some of its great masters. I began learning the sitar and spent seven years studying under a wonderful Guru ji (master). Along the way, I started sketching musicians, both from life and from memory, eventually turning these studies into paintings. Some took a cubist form—perhaps to introduce a touch of abstraction and reflect the meditative, timeless quality of Indian music. I began this painting in 2022 and completely transformed it in June 2025. This is my latest Sitarist."
