According to El Pais the 5 paintings were stolen last June from a Madrid mansion. It is unclear why details have emerged now. The theft appeared to have been highly professional and took place when the owner was away. The thieves left no traces. The works, comprising portraits and landscapes, were stolen last June.  It was however unclear exactly what paintings but according to one contemporary art specialist they would be extremely difficult to sell. The owner of the paintings was a close friend to Bacon, the paper said.  Irish-born Bacon died in Madrid in 1992, aged 82.
