The British Museum is delighted to announce that Tracey Emin is to join the Board of Trustees. Emin will be the first female Royal Academician appointed to the role in the Museum’s history.
George Osborne, Chair of the British Museum Trustees, said: “Tracey is one of Britain’s greatest artists, and after 270 years she will be the first female Royal Academician to become a Trustee of the British Museum. Having regenerated her hometown through her willpower, I know she will bring incredible energy, insight and creativity to the Board. We are delighted to have her join us.”
Tracey Emin said: “It’s one of my favourite museums in the entire world. I love everything Egyptian. I’m very proud to be a trustee and I hope my presence will be a positive contribution.”
Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963 and studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal
College of Art, London. She represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and was elected a Royal Academician in the same year. In 2011, Emin became the Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and in 2013 Queen Elizabeth II appointed her Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the visual arts.
Tracey Emin’s art is one of disclosure, using her life events as inspiration for works ranging from painting, neon, drawing, video and installation to photography, needlework and sculpture. Emin reveals her hopes, humiliations, failures and successes in candid and, at times, excoriating work.
In November 2020, Emin opened a major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The exhibition, entitled Emin/Munch: The Loneliness of the Soul, then toured to the new Munch Museum, Oslo, in the spring of 2021. The artist’s largest bronze artwork to date,The Mother, was unveiled in June 2022, a permanent public commission for Oslo’s Museum Island.
Alongside her practice, Emin has also recently focused on supporting the regeneration of her hometown of Margate. She has built her primary studio there, as well as TKE Studios, a free eighteen-month learning experience for artists.
Emin will replace Grayson Perry as a British Museum Trustee nominated by the Royal Academy. Former Royal Academician Trustees include Antony Gormley.
