Today marks the beginning of a two-day conference on the protection of endangered cultural heritage, held at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. The conference brings together experts from around the world to discuss concrete measures to tackle the ongoing destruction of cultural sites by Isil in Iraq and Syria, and to prevent other similar catastrophes.
France is a leading player in this initiative, having presented a proposal to establish an international fund to finance these protective and preventive measures. France hopes to raise at least $100m for this initiative, a third of which they are willing to contribute themselves.
All proposals from this conference will be presented as the Abu Dhabi Declaration, which will be announced on Saturday in the presence of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad, and President Hollande, as they fulfill their roles of co-hosts for this event. During his stay in Abu Dhabi, President Hollande is also due to visit the recently completed Louvre Abu Dhabi building.
