As of now Berlin galleries have the opportunity to apply for grants for artfair participations in a pilot funding program for the year 2023. Each gallery can receive a maximum of 12,000 euros for up to two artfair participations, both in German and international fairs.
The funding covers the rental costs for a fair booth. The Berlin Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises addresses a gap in the existing program, which is financed by funds from the "Improvement of Regional Economic Structures" (GRW) department.
According to GRW guidelines, art galleries are not eligible to apply for grants. However, through this new pilot funding program supported by state funds, art galleries are now specifically eligible to seek subsidies for their internationalization efforts.
Berlin is globally renowned as one of the largest and most innovative hubs for contemporary art. The city is home to 6,000 artists who live and work here. The approximately 350 private galleries in the city contribute to the positive image of Berlin through their exhibitions featuring both German and international artists.
