For centuries, tapestries have served as a narrative form to illustrate social and political developments and issues. With his project "Eigen Schuld" (a play on words which can mean both "your debt" and "your fault"), Dutch art student Mart Veldhuis aims to do the same.
For centuries, tapestries have served as a narrative form to illustrate social and political developments and issues. With his project "Eigen Schuld" (a play on words which can mean both "your debt" and "your fault"), Dutch art student Mart Veldhuis aims to do the same. The tapestry symbolizes the life of a student burdened by a continuously increasing student loan, the lions represent the Dutch government. The selling price of the tapestry (€45,879.40 in April 2023) is determined by the total value of his own student debt. By linking the financial reality to the physical reality of the tapestry, Mart Veldhuis intends to increase awareness about student debts and the consequences of the social student finance system in the Netherlands. This work represents the voice of the student who has studied under the Dutch social loan system.
