The Naked Room Gallery to Represent Ukraine at the 59th Venice Biennale

The Naked Room gallery will represent Ukraine at the 59th Venice Biennale with the art project Fountain of Exhaustion. High Water which was selected by ranked-choice voting.

"The Naked Room gallery will represent Ukraine at the 59th Venice Biennale with the art project Fountain of Exhaustion. High Water which was selected by ranked-choice voting," the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine posted on Facebook.

The exhibition will be curated by Lizaveta Herman, Maria Lanko, and Borys Filonenko with Pavlo Makov as the featured artist. The project fulfilled Makov's idea, which appeared back in 1995: a series of wall-mounted copper funnels to function as a fountain.

In the 1990s, almost all the fountains in Kharkiv city, where Makov lives and works, did not function and turned into paradoxical city objects. The artist's project has not been implemented in full, with streams of water. Today, the Makov Fountain is becoming a form of depletion on the cultural, economic, and political levels. The work will take on a new meaning in Venice, which is slowly going underwater. The exposition will be accompanied by archival materials talking about the history of the installation.

La Biennale di Venezia is one of the leading exhibitions of contemporary art, held biennially (in odd-numbered years) in Venice. Ukraine has been participating in the Venice Biennale since 2001.
