The future head of department, who obtained the highest evaluation in the open call for the post, has proven professional and academic experience, with a clear vision on the Global South and an interest in institutionality and art
The open call for the post of Head of Curatorial Programmes and Research at the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona has been resolved with the appointment of María Berríos (1978, Santiago de Chile), who holds a degree in Sociology and a Masters in Latin-American Cultural Studies from the Universidad de Chile and studied for a PhD in Sociology at Goldsmiths College, London. Her work as researcher, curator and member of art collectives explores themes spanning art, architecture, culture and politics, with special interest in collective experiments of cultural solidarity with the Global South – particularly Latin America – and its exhibition formats during the 1960s and 1970s. Reporting to the Director and in accordance with the discourse and research lines of the Museum, her role will be to accompany and to develop, jointly and transversally with the Museum team, the contents of Exhibitions, Public Programmes, Education, Collection, Publications, Archives and Library.
On Berríos’ incorporation to the Museum team, the evaluation committee has emphasised ‘her over twenty-year-long global professional experience in the art world, the suitability of her academic qualifications, and her versatility as a professional curator of exhibitions, publisher, educator and participant in research and artistic collaboration projects’.
