The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation and its long-term representative Galerie Thomas Schulte are pleased to inform about a new documentary on the artist, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, which will premiere this Sunday at the Berlinale Internationale Filmfestspiele. Fenton Bailey's and Randy Barbato's documentary features various of the artist's closest relatives, friends and lovers, including Edward Mapplethorpe, Fran Lebowitz, Brice Marden, Debbie Harry, a. o., and – in a chronological account of the artist's life – offers an insight into the ongoing controversy around his work.

Bailey's and Barbato's documentary coincides with the major retrospective, Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium, which is going to simultaneously open at the J. Paul Getty Museum and at LACMA in March. The exhibition will draw from both the museums' recent acquisitions and archives. After its inauguration in Los Angeles the exhibition will travel  to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. A third international venue is going to be announced.
