The 5th Singapore International Photography Festival 2016

The Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) officially launched festival highlights Open Call Showcase and The Archive as Conversation on 6 October 2016 at the Open Plaza of National Library Building, with Minister of Social and Family Development, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, as Guest of Honour. Also making a Southeast Asian debut on 7 October at the festival village, DECK, are photographic works by critically-acclaimed photographer, Daido Moriyama.

Embracing the theme, The Archive, the fifth edition of the photo festival explores how social consciousness affects one’s notion and shifting perception of the nature and role of photography as the world’s visual language. Photography is no longer just a medium used to document historical moments or memories; as an art form and expressive medium, it is pushing new frontiers in the institution level as well as personal domain alongside technology advancement and surge of social media platform. Photography plays a big influence in the quality of people’s lives.

Selected by a jury panel of three which includes Kazuko Sekiji (Curator, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography), Seok Jae-Hyun (Independent Curator and Editor, Photo Dot Magazine) and Ingo Taubhorn (Curator, House of Photography, Deichtorhallen Germany), the SIPF Open Call Showcase features works of 40 photographers from 18 countries. 22 of these portfolios are shown at the six MRT stations, ten at the Open Plaza of National Library Building and eight at Alliance Française de Singapour.

Presented in eight containers at the Open Plaza of National Library Building, The Archive as Conversation continues as apparatuses, dialogues, and new and old mediums in the form of revisiting old photo studio images, installations, photo prints, videos and conceptual narratives by nine artists. Each artist will present a series of works within each container.
